This year marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership between China and the European Union. In recent times, there have been frequent high-level interactions between China and the EU, which have pointed the way for bilateral economic and trade cooperation and injected new momentum. According to the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at the invitation of German Chancellor Scholz and the French government, Premier Li Qiang paid an official visit to Germany and held the seventh round of Sino-German government consultations from June 18 to 23, and paid an official visit to France and attended the New Global Compact on Financing Summit.

China and Europe are important trade partners

Experts generally say that since this year, China-EU exchanges have been accelerated, with bilateral talks between China, Germany and France, trilateral meetings between China, France and Europe, and close interaction between Chinese and EU institutions. The momentum of economic and trade cooperation has been maintained.

According to data released by the General Administration of Customs, in the first five months, the EU was China's second largest trading partner, with the total value of China's trade with the EU amounting to 2.28 trillion yuan, an increase of 3.6%, accounting for 13.6%. Among them, exports to the EU were 1.48 trillion yuan, up 2.4%; imports from the EU were 800.4 billion yuan, up 5.8%; and the trade surplus with the EU was 679.09 billion yuan, narrowing by 1.3%.

Ye Jiang, a researcher at the Shanghai Institute of International Studies, said in an interview with the China Trade Journal that China and the EU are important trade partners to each other and their industries are highly complementary. The EU has always been China's largest source of technology imports, and Chinese industries and goods are also needed by the EU market. Although the epidemic has had some impact on China-EU trade in the past few years, the stable operation of China-EU trains has helped China-EU trade continue to grow.

According to the annual seminar report of the French Fashion Institute (lfm) in mid-December, China is not only the biggest but also the only winner in the EU25 textile and clothing market after the textile quotas have been abolished.
